Teens at risk of anaphylaxis face a number of challenges, including:

  • the shift from elementary school to a much larger middle or high school, which can mean a loss of control over their school environment
  • a new set of friends who may not be aware of their anaphylaxis or what to do in an emergency
  • a complete re-ordering of the brain during puberty where, the part of the brain that makes decisions is the last to mature
  • the desire to fit in, which may mean not telling people about their allergies, not carrying their medication and/or taking unnecessary risks
